At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
